Phonetics is an important part in learning a foreign language and the material base in oral communication. Without learning phonetics, one can't learn any language well. Based on this, the writer began to think about phonetic teaching in Taishan College and try to apply contextual phonetic teaching mode to their actual English phonetic teaching.This thesis makes action research as its research method. From the tests and questionnaire for the freshmen of Taishan College, we find the shortcoming of traditional phonetic teaching .Then the writer made a try to apply contextual phonetic teaching mode to the actual English phonetic teachingThis thesis first of all introduces the status quo of phonetic teaching, pointing out the factors that influence phonetic study, which makes the writer begin to think about the choice of proper phonetic teaching mode. In the second part, the writer analyses the different stages of phonetic teaching and their different phonetic teaching modes, such as intuitive-imitative approach, analytic-linguistic approach, listening and speaking approach and communicating approach, etc.. Each approach gets both its advantages and disadvantages, which shows that with the development of the society, phonetic teaching mode is also improving. The teaching modes have developed from simplicity to diversity, from induction to deduction and from teaching to learning. In this sense, contextual phonetic teaching is bound to turn up, which reappears the relationship and contradiction between image and abstraction, reality and theory, perception and ration and old knowledge and new knowledge, whose purpose is to inspire the students'emotion. Contextual phonetic teaching mode is just a proper teaching mode in Taishan College. In the third part, the writer analyses the theories that influence contextual phonetic teaching mode. Using Krashen's Input Hypothesis , the Language Transport Theory and the constructivism theory as the theoretical base, this thesis points out that our teaching can get the expected result in view of one's cognition, corporation and the context. In the fourth part, in order to test the effect of the contextual phonetic teaching mode, this thesis puts two classes into an experiment, after the analysis of the results, the writer makes sure that in order to get the ideal effect, one must change from accepting study to discovering study, broaden the cultural input, and construct understanding relationship between teacher and students. It at last gets to the conclusion.From the conclusion we can see contextual phonetic teaching mode conforms to the cognitive rule of foreign language learning, which expedites the students'learning process, makes the students'overcome their psychological obstacles. It can help improve the students pronunciation and intonation.
