The main purpose of this paper is to illustrate the theoretical principle underlying the multimedia-aided English learning and to explore the roles of college English teachers in this new teaching mode.College English teaching has been undertaking an earth-shaking reform ever since mid-1980s. Model of teaching, a bridge between theory and practice plays an important part in the reform of college English teaching. The traditional teacher-centered model of teaching is out of date in present society. The idea of learner-centeredness is gaining more and more support. This paper reviews the English teaching progress in China, makes a rational analysis on the teacher-centered approach to the college English teaching, and points out its problems.The rapid development in the multimedia technology and in computer as well as the Internet, gives rise to their application into English teaching. Hence, there appears a new teaching mode -- multimedia-aided English teaching mode.Then the paper probes into the theory guiding the multimedia-aided English teaching– constructivism, and set forth how to apply the constructivism in language teaching.With the application of multimedia technology and the support of this theory, students are encouraged to become the center of the classroom. This paper also makes a rational analysis on the learner-centered approach to the college English teaching, which emphasizes learner's individualized and autonomous learning. Autonomous learning refers to the notion that the learner takes the responsibility for his/her own study. Drawing on the empirical experience in teaching English to non-English majors with the textbook of New Horizon College English through the multimedia-aided mode, the author gives an account of how classes are conducted in two multimedia classrooms, one for students'autonomous learning; the other for teacher-instructed learning.In this new teaching mode, students become the center of the class activities, so the teacher should change his or her roles accordingly. They can play the role as a planner, as a controller, as a supervisor, as an organizer, as a prompter, as a facilitator...
