London Image For The City In Modern Chinese Overseas Travels

What will be happened when imagologie meets urban study? With that question the thesis takes image of London in the cross-cultural view a topic, observing some overseas travel-writings in the early modern period in Chinese history, as to study the change of the image of London in the eye of the Other. In the view of imagologie in comparative literature, a typical urban London is put into study and many different cognition of urban London image, from the First Opium War to the mid of the twentieth century, is concluded, thus the forming, change and development of that image, so as to hold a representation of urban image and it's cultural meaning through an interlace of space-time viewpoint.The thesis is comprised of three parts. Firstly, the motive and the goal of the study are given an interpretation and a combination of imagologie and urban study is made in order to wake up an interaction between these two fields; The next step is to discuss the London image separately in works in two periods of Chinese modern history with a connection of development of London; Finally a comparison is being made between the different image created by different Others. London, as an object observed, follows its nature in the history of forming and developing its image; While its image differentiated with the varieties of self-viewpoint and cultural identification of observers. Mostly and meaningfully the urban image, such as London, is characterized of a representation of Other-city in the cross-national and cross-cultural consideration.
