With the rapid development of the Internet, the problem of "Information overload" has become more and more serious. It is difficult for common users to access information rapidly and accurately. Traditional information retrieval tools have their disadvantages, though they solve some problems of information orientation. In this paper, we elaborate an intelligent search agent working on the Internet, introduce the conception of ontology into the agent, make use of ability of ontology to describe semantic knowledge, set up a simple model of information agent using ontology to standardize the user's requests, analyze the results returned by the search agent and study the user's interests in order to let the information agent to retrieve information for users without requests. We intend to develop an agent with the characteristics such as autonomy, pro-activity, intelligence etc.In this paper, our work mainly focuses on the following aspect:1. Set up an ontology sample in some domain, try to find an effective format to describe, express, store, and share the ontology,2. Use the ontology sample, which we set up to standardize the user's requests, to let the information agent to understand the intention of the user exactly.3. Analyze and filter the results returned by the search agent, provide the information that meets the user's requests exactly.4. Learning the user's interests and roam independently on the Internet for the user's interests. We introduce the ontology technology into the information agent's three main function modules: Information searching module, information-filtering module, and machine-learning module. The three function modules are integrated as a whole. The system has goodintelligence and pro-activeness.
