This paper focuses on China Telecom's solutions of replacing copper loop with optical networks, including network design and applications. Broadband services have become China Telecom's strategic core business, and been widely used in numerous perspectives of people's daily life. Typical ADSL is no longer able to satisfy the bandwidth demand of users. Instead, PON can provide larger bandwidth while at the same time maintaining the capacity of supporting traditional telecom services. This paper starts with the user demand to explain the necessity of developing PON and summarizes the mainstream FTTx technologies. It concludes that EPON is the most appropriate technology for FTTx deployment by conducting comparative study of xDSL, LAN, peer-to-peer, EPON as well as GPON.This paper makes in-depth study of realizing dynamic bandwidth allocation, Qos ensurance of multi-services, network security, and user authorization on the basis of EPON.This paper emphasizes EPON's capability of bearing multi-services. It defines the principals of designing point-to-point FTTx networks and gives recommendations for building networks in diverse scenarios, which can be followed during the China Telecom's operation of replacing existing copper local loop with optical networks. Combining the example of a FTTx local network roll out, it makes detailed designing and engineering planning for network upgrading in practice and verifies the feasibility of technological choices and network planning through engineering cases.
