With the continuous expansion of production and living area, the zoom systems are in the growing demand. optical design theory of the zoom systems have been improved and perfect, craft is also in maturation. In this background, it seems to be significant to study the zoom systems in depth.Firstly, I review the development process of zoom systems, summarize the development status of the field, generalize the emerging technologies, new craft, new materials of the zoom systems, and forecast the future development trends. Secondly, I discuss the principle of the zoom systems, zooming laws, feasible solution areas based on the Gaussian optics method. Furthermore, I introduce the specific steps of the zoom lens design on the base of PW method introducing the way of compensation selection, selection of components, focal power distribution, etc. Finally, from the perspective of optimum design, I complete optical design optimization which used to test wavefront of the diffraction gratings relying on the optimization power of ZEMAX. And I analysis the solution method of cam compensation curve.
