As a natural phenomenon, wind has remarkable power. It is capable to make a great impact on human's life, including positive effects and negative effects. Wind has been studying on for a long time. In recent years, more and more attention is paid to observe and study the wind in the world. The vane and anemometer are used to measure the direction and speed of the wind respectively. Particularly, the accuracy of artillery is greatly affected by the wind direction and speed. Therefore, wind direction and speed must be measured precisely before firing and the firing parameters should be adjusted according to wind measurement result. Portable mechanical wind measurement device used popularly in army at the present time. It is easy to use but not accurate enough. In order to improve the accuracy and usability of wind measurement device, a new solution for wind measurement is developed in this paper based on a good study of the overview of wind measurement device and various of sensors. It based on MSP430 and electronic compass technology. Some measures are also taken to reduce measure error, including ellipse hypothesis-based angle-calibration and eight position calibration based on Fourier series compass error model and linear interpolation. In addition, the software flow and power management are optimized to reduce power consumption. Compared to the old wind measurement device, the new wind measurement system is able to get more accurate result with a higher resolution. To work with the wind measurement device, a hand-hold terminal and PC software is also designed.
