In recent years, with increasing emphasis on smoking and health problems, people are not only concerned about the impact of smokers in mainstream smoke, but also concerned about environmental tobacco smoke pollution and hazards. Sidestream smoke is a major source of environmental tobacco smoke, which provides 60% to 85% of the particulate matter and 87% to 99% of the gas phase. the side-stream cigarette smoke is the largest contributor to the environmental tobacco smoke , accurate analysis of sidestream cigarette smoke is of great significance for understanding and evaluating the impact of smoking on the ambient air.The analysis methods and their application of tobacco-specific nitrosamines and gas phase free radicals in mainstream cigarette smoke and cigarette smoke have been studied in this paper. Our research work is involved the following three parts:An analytical method for determination of 4 kinds of tobacco specific nitrosamines (TSNAs) in cigarette side stream smoke was developed by LC-MS-MS. A fishtail chimney and Cambridge filter were used to capture the particulate matters consisting of TSNAs in side stream smoke. The Cambridge filter was put in a 250ml conical flask with 100μL internal standards solution and 20ml(100mmol/L)ammonium acetate solution and then shaken in mechanical oscillator for 40 minutes. The extract liquor was filtered through 0.22μm filter membrane and then analyzed by LC-MS-MS. The fishtail chimney eluent was concentrated and purified with PCX solid extraction, then analyzed by LC-MS-MS. Results: The limits of detection were in the range of 0.09~0.25ng/mL and linear correlation coefficients are above 0.996. The recoveries of 4 kinds of TSNAs ranged from 88.4% to 109.5% and the relative standard deviations were all below 7%.An analytical method was developed for the simultaneous determination of gas phase free radicals in mainstream and sidestream cigarette smoke.two trap bottless in serises for gas phase free radicals was joined to the signal channel smoking machine. 20mL,concentration of 0.02mol/L solution of N-t-Butyl-α-phenylnitrone(PBN) was added to bottles and the formed adduct was detected with electron spin resonance spectrometer (ESR). 2,2,6,6 - tetramethyl-piperidinyl-1-oxy(TEMPO) was used as a standard sample and calculated the free redical numbers by external standard method. It was proved that This method has good reproducible, standard deviation (RSD) of gas phase free radical is 5.85% in mainstream smoke and 8.93% in sidestream smoke. With applying established analysis methods before, 14 different brands of cigarettes at home and abroad were selected to determine tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs) and gas phase free radicals in mainsteam and sidestream smoke.results showed that emissions of tobacco-specific nitrosamines(TSNAs) in the sidestream smoke is more than in mainstream smoke, especially NNK. emissions of gas phase free radicals in sidestream smoke is less than in mainstream smoke, but this mechanism was complexed and still not clear. For different types of cigarette, emissions of gad phase free radicals in mainstream and sidestream smoke gas were not associated with tar, therefore, emissions of gas phase free radicals were not inferred bu the contents of tar.
