In the sidestream smoke of cigarette, there are many substances which are harmful to people's health, such as nicotine, aldehyde. Based on the analysis of the compositon in mainstream smoke and sidestream smoke of cigarette, the method of reducing sidestream smoke of cigarettes was developed.According to the formation mechanism of sidestream smoke, a special cigarette paper was produced and used to control the release level of the sidestream smoke. Additionally, some expanded tobacco and buring additives were used toreduce the products of the cigarette decomposition and carbonization. It was because that the using of expanded tobacco could reduce the consumption of tobacco burned in a tobacco role and the burning additives could make tobacco combust more completely than general cigarettes.The influence of paper filler additives, basis weight, porosity and burning additives on sidestream total particulate matter (STPM), taste of cigarette were investigated. And a kind of ash solidification additive was used to improve the ash appearance and to reduce more sidestream smoke.This research proposed an optimal recipe of producing low sidestream smoke cigarette paper. In accordance with the recipe, the cigarette paper contains 10 % by weight of magnesium hydroxide, 30 % by weight of calcium carbonate , 5 % by weight of potassium citrate, 2 % by weight of ash solidification additivebesides the materials used in traditional cigarette paper. It has a basis weight of 35 g / m2, a porosity of 50 cubic centimeters per minute (CU) by the Coresta method.The cigarette paper with different filler addsitives for reducing sidestream smoke and their combustition products were characterized by XRD technique. It was found that the active magnesium hydroxide formed in the pulp by the reaction of magnisium acetate and potassium hydroxide dispersed more completely than the powder of magnesium hydroxide added directly in the pulp. The addition of calcium carbonate facilitated the formation of fine magnesium oxide powder decomposed from magnesium hydroxide. The appearance of active magnesium hydroxide prevented calcium carbonate from decomposing, and facilitated the formation of fine caicium oxide powder when the cigarette paper was burned. The co-operation of the additives of magnesium hydroxide and calcium carbonate in the burning of cigarette paper improved the performance of reducing sidestream smoke.A brand of cigarette was then developed, which exhibited low level of sidestream smoke. The composion of its sidestream smoke was analysed.It was found that the TPM and nicotine in sidestream smoke were reduced by 65% and 45% respectively , compared with general cigarette. And there was little loss in tobacco aroma and taste.The semi-volatile constituents in mainstream and sidestream smoke of cigarettes were determined and the ratios of the semi-volatile constituents of sidestream/mainstream were obtained. The results of the semi-volatileconstituents in sidestream smoke showed that the total amount of semi-volatile constituents in sidestream smoke of developed cigarettes was reduced obviously. It was further confirmed that low sidestream cigarettes could release fewer amounts of smoke into the environment as compared with general cigarettes.
