Squeeze casting combines casting with forging process, which is a near-net shaping technology. The technology combines the advantages of casting and forging and avoids the defects. The aluminum alloy loading wheel is an important component of mobile devices of the tanks and armored vehicles. Better economic and social effects through the liquid forging process to produce loading wheel can be achieved. But the loading wheel produced by liquid die forging has a few defects such as shrinkage cavity or porosity and hot crack. This paper is mainly to explore the mechanism of shrinkage and thermal cracking through numerical simulations, and to study the influence of local load on the loading wheel performance by local load experiments.First, this paper established the criterions of shrinkage and thermal cracking. Then this paper simulated the dynamic changes of the temperature and solid fraction in the solidification process of loading wheel by ProCAST software. At the same time, the positions of defects including shrinkage and hot tearing in wheel are predicted. Based on the simulations, special attention is given to pressure of squeeze casting, and the results of numerical simulation indicated that increasing pressure contributed a lot to avoiding defects such as shrinkage and hot tearing.A strong basic theory was established according to the results of numerical simulation of local load. We have analyzed the influence of different feed shrinkage on various performances of workpiece. After the heat treatment, we took a piece of loading wheel and completed the six tests including density measurement, hardness measurement, tensile mechanical properties, fracture scanning, microstructures, energy spectrum analysis. The more comprehensive analyses of the distribution of the density, hardness change, tensile strength, fracture type, fracture mode, crack expansion path, the average grain size, second phase distribution, grain boundary composition and so on were given. We made the relevant quantitative and qualitative analyses by the tests of various performances of the wheel .We further discussed the influences of feed shrinkage on various performances of the wheel.
