ObjectivesTo investigate the status about obesity and obesity-related knowledge, attitudes, practice and the determinants among pupils in Changsha. To provide scientific evidence for the effective implementation of health education and the prevention and control of childhood obesity.MethodsApplying cluster sampling method, and self-designed questionnaire to investigate 912 students of two primary schools randomly selected from Yuelu District and Tianxin District in Changsha about obesity and obesity-related knowledge, attitudes, practice health education. To study the main determinants about the obesity and obesity-related health education among pupils in primary schools using t test, ANOVA, Wilcoxon rank sum test, Kruskal-Wallis H test and Ordinal regression method.Results1. The present obesity situation among pupilsDuring the pupils had surveyed, obesity rate was 7.1%, overweight rate was 10.9%, overweight and obesity rate was 18.0%, higher rate of overweight and obesity in boys than girls, the highest rate of obesity was 7.9% among children aged 11. The highest rate of overweight and obesity rate was 19.2% among children aged 9.2. Obesity-related knowledge of pupils in primary schoolsThe awareness rate of Obesity-related knowledge among the pupils was 57.4%, and obese students know much more obesity-related knowledge than overweight and not overweight students. The determinants of students knowing about obesity-related knowledge included age, BMI levels, weekly pocket money, father's education level, the exercise times of mother per week, main beverage.3. Obesity-related attitude of pupils in primary schoolThe formation rate of obesity-related positive attitude among the pupils was 63.5%, the positive attitude formation rate of not overweight students was higher than overweight and obese student. Obesity-related knowledge scores, educational level of father, father's occupation, the exercise times of father per week, breakfast are the factors affecting the student obesity-related attitude. Obesity-related attitudes of students who get higher score are more positive, and the students whose father's occupation is teacher have more positive attitude and get higher score.4. Obesity-related practice of pupils in primary schoolThe determinants of students known about obesity-related practice include gender, BMI level, obesity-related knowledge score, weekly pocket money, father's education level, mother's occupation, the exercise times of mother per week, main snacks, main drinking, and dinner staple food. Boys' practice score is lower than girls'; and the practice score of students whose weekly pocket money is less than 10 yuan is the 50 yuan's 2.43 times; the practice score of students whose mother's exercise times per week is zero is 0.59 times than that of three or above; the practice score of students whose mainly drink is carbonated drinks is 0.54 times than that of plain boiled water; the practice score of students whose dinner is mainly in pasta is higher than that of mainly in snacks.5. The determinants of overweight and obesity among pupilsThe main determinants of overweight and obesity are gender, obesity-related attitude, mother's education level, father's occupation, main snacks, main drink, lunch, dinner. The possibility of boys happen overweight or obesity is the girls' 2.49 times; the overweight or obesity possibility of students whose mother only study in elementary school or below is the students'whose mother's education degree university or above 3.26 times; the overweight or obesity possibility of students whose father's occupation is a merchant is 1.77 times compared with others; the students whose lunch and dinner mainly with snacks have the higher possibility of overweight or obesity.Conclusion1. The overweight and obesity level of Changsha is lower than that of the large cities in our country.The pupils of 3~6 grade had a 10.9% overweight rate, an 7.1% obesity rate, as well as an overweight and obesity rate at 18.0% in Changsha. The rate of overweight and obesity among boys is higher than girls.2. The main determinants on overweight and obesity among pupils are students'own diet structure, parents' cultural level, parents' professional type, parents' exercise habits.3. The main determinants of obesity-related knowledge, attitudes and practice of pupils were students'own diet structure and parents' cultural level. The positive attitude score and practice score of not overweight students was higher than that of overweight or obesity students. The higher the obesity-related knowledge score of pupils was, the more positive the attitude was, the more health the practice was.
