Objective:This research is to investigate the constitution classification of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) in subjects with impaired glucose tolerance and to explore the intrinsic relationship between the development of IGT and constitution of TCM. Providing theoretical basis for investigation of the Chinese constitution of IGT and providing new ideas for the prevention and treatment of IGT. Methods: The cases were selected from subjects who visited at the first and the second affiliated hospital of Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in June 2010 to December 2010. Based on the diagnostic criteria for IGT and the sorting standard of traditional Chinese medicine, the selected subjects'height, weight, body mass index BMI, blood-lipid, renal function, body blood pressure, electrocardiogram and so on were measured respectively, and these indicators were explored by statistical software SPSS16.0. Results:(1)In this study, 153 cases were selected, accounting for 98 cases (64.05%) of simple, compound accounted for 55 cases (35.95%),therefore this study is mainly to explore classification of simple constitution. (2) The simple constitution classifications distributions in subjects with impaired glucose tolerance are: phlegm-dampness constitution (35 cases, accounting for 22.88%), Yin- deficiency constitution (21 cases, accounting for 13.73%), Blood-stasis constitution (13 cases, accounting for 8.50%), dampness-heat constitution (12 cases, accounting for 7.84%), Qi-deficiency constitution (12 cases, accounting for 7.84%), Qi-stagnation constitution (5 cases, accounting for 3.27%). And in compound constitution, phlegm-dampness constitution, Yin-deficiency constitution, Qi-deficiency constitution, Blood-stasis constitution, dampness-heat constitution are accounted for 65.46%, 38.18%, 36.36%, 30.91%,14.55% respectively.(3)The levels of fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and oral glucose tolerance test 2 hours plasma glucose (OGTT2hPG) in phlegm-dampness constitution, Yin-deficiency constitution, Qi-deficiency constitution, Blood-stasis constitution, dampness-heat constitution were no significant difference(P>0.05).? The order of BIM was:? phlegm-dampness? >? Qi‐deficiency? >? dampness-heat? >? Blood-stasis >?Yin-deficiency. BMI of Yin-deficiency constitution has significant difference from the other four constitutions (P<0.01). The levels of total cholesterol (TC), Triglyceride (TG) in the main five constitutions had no difference; the level of blood creatinine, urea nitrogen and abnormal rate of electrocardiogram (ECG) in Blood-stasis constitution was the highest. Conclusions:(1) Performances of TCM constitution of IGT subjects are simple and compound constitution, in which a larger proportion is the simple constitution. (2) The simple constitution classifications distributions in subjects with impaired glucose tolerance are: phlegm-dampness constitution, Yin-deficiency constitution, Blood-stasis constitution, Qi-deficiency constitution, dampness-heat constitution. (3)The levels of FPG, OGTT2hPG, TG,TC of the main five constitutions have no difference. BMI of phlegm-dampness constitution is the highest, then Qi-deficiency constitution following. The levels of blood creatinine, urea nitrogen and abnormal rate of electrocardiogram (ECG) in Blood-stasis constitution are the highest. Indicating that Phlegm-dampness constitution mostly belongs to obesity type and the prognosis of Blood-stasis constitution maybe poor.
