Impatiens balsamina L.,a well-known herbal medicine, is now widely cultivated as a medicinal.The seeds,semen impatientis, have been used to treat lump in the abdomen and cancer of the esophagus,to act as an emmenagogue,to suppress puerperal pain,etc.The seeds have been also used as contraceptives, esophagocadiac cancer, anticancer agent, amenorrhea,etc. Chemical composition of their reports at home and abroad mainly concentrated in the the flowers of Impatiens balsamina L., reports on the anti-tumor activity components and determination methods of the main components of seeds of Impatiens balsamina L. are rarely. In order to explore the anti-tumor effects of the seeds of Impatiens balsamina L.,and utilize the ample resources in China and find new pharmaco-active compound, we carried out systematic research on the anti-tumor activity components and determination methods of the main components of the seeds of Impatiens balsamina L.In order to full use of Impatiens balsamina L., chemical studies on the seeds of Impatiens balsamina L. were carried out, Several kinds of separation methods (silica gel column chromatographic analysis, Sephadex LH-20 column chromatogram, ODS chromatography, MCI chromatography and so on) were applied to study its chemical composition,10 compounds were separated and purified from 80%and 60%ethanol extractions, the structures of 9 compounds were determined by spectral methods including MS,!H NMR, I3C NMR, DEPT, HSQC, HMBC, NOESY, as well as the comparison the physics and chemistry nature with references. They were identified as Balsaminones A (Ib-1), Balsaminones B (Ib-2), Balsaminones C (Ib-3), hosenkoside A (Ib-4), hosenkoside B (Ib-5), hosenkoside C (Ib-6), hosenkoside D (Ib-7), quercetin-3-0-[a-rhamnose-(1→2)-β-D-glucopyranosyl]-5-0-β-D-glucopyranoside(Ib-8), quercetin-3, quercetin-3-0-[(6"'-0-caffeoyl)-a-L-rhamnose-(l-→2)-β-D-glucopyranosyl]-5-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (Ib-9).Among these compounds, Ib-3 is new compounds.Based on the reports of the antitumor activity of Garden Balsam Seed (seeds of Impatiens balsamina L.) are rarely. In order to explore the anti-tumor effects of the seeds of Impatiens balsamina L., MTT assay was used to evaluate the inhibiting effects of eight compounds on the proliferation of A549 cells. The results show that eight compounds could inhibit the growth of A549 cells respectively. Exponential growth phase A549 cells were treated with six compounds for 48 h, then the changes of cell cycle were analyzed by flow cytometry.
