Experimental Study On The Mechanisms And Factors Of The Semantic Contents Of Chinese Words Being Processed In Subthreshold Level

With the improvement of the paradigm and technological innovation, more and more attention had been paid on the researches of unconscious by the cognitive scientists. Over the past 30 years, research on unconscious achieved fruitful results. Among them, the mechanism of the processing of subliminal semantic priming had been discussed lively, a few of typical models was made:Spreading Priming Model,Response Competing Model and Compound Cue Model. But each of them can not give a full explanation on the phenomenon of subliminal semantic priming. In this study, based on analysis of previous studies, we think that the start stimulus familiarity, stimulus set and target set size, bottom-up "strategic" process and top-down "impact" of process, and other factors will affect the subliminal semantic priming. There are four experiments designed to test the above factors in this study.In experiment 1,the stimulus set and the selected target set was the classification of the limited capacity of words as stimuli, and a distinction is made between the familiarity of the prime words and target words in order to examine whether the familiarity of primes will affect the subliminal semantic priming; Experiment 2, the capacity of the target set is maintained, is designed to investigated whether the different capacity areas of vocabulary can lead to the phenomenon of subliminal semantic priming by expanding the capacity of stimulate set. In experiment 3, the consistency ratio of the primes and target is adjusted to test subjects that whether changes in the experimental background to effectively adjust their behavior. Experiment 4 of the experimental process of the control room monitor the position to examine whether endogenous attention can influence the processing of subliminal semantic priming.The results of this study:1, Experiments 1 and 2, regardless of stimulus familiarity or stimulus set and target set size changes, are given a stable phenomenon of subliminal semantic priming, which proves the existence of unconscious process, and in support of spreading priming model.2, Experiment 3 result fom changes in the background of individual changes in response strategies, indicating that bottom-top "strategic" process indeed have an impact on subliminal semantic processing. The results support the response competition model.3, Experiment 4, only the processed endogenous attention can lead to subliminal primes semantic priming effect, the results support the newly proposed the theory of global neuronal workspace(GNW).The results of this study can not be fully explained by only one theory, which indicates the exploration of the unconscious processing mechanisms will be continued.
