Textbooks are the important basis for English teaching. In China, with more and more attention given to the English Education and the development of it, a large number of English teaching materials have emerged, especially college English textbooks with various kinds and uneven qualities. Experiencing English is a set of entirely new textbooks published by Higher Education Press in 2002 and it has been widely used by colleges since its publishing.Teaching material assessment is a comprehensive subject, involving many aspects of textbook edit, and it should work out the teaching goal and it should be the standard setting and test of many investigation targets about teachers'and students'needs. In the past, the textbook assessment is mainly about the qualitative evaluation.With the development and popularization of computer science, many scholars and educators have made some kinds of corpora and softwares to test the vocabulary, sentence length, the difficulty of the reading materials and the quantitative evaluation is introduced in the teaching material assessment. Nowadays, the combination of qualitative and quantitative evaluation is the new trend of textbook assessment. In this essay, the textbook—Experiencing English is tested with the combination of quantitative and qualitative evaluation and the former one is mainly used to check whether this set of textbooks meets the basic need of higher education, has a good cohesion with the high school English, an appropriate practicability and a proper progress of difficulty.In this essay, the vocabulary test software—Range is used to check whether the words in Experiencing English belong to the daily English glossary; with the basic program from Range, the word lists of high school English vocabulary and CET 4 vocabulary are made according to the high school and college English teaching syllabi to test the coverage of these two glossaries in this set of textbooks in order to find out its cohesion with the high school English and the practicability of the complement about college English teaching goal; the repetition of new words is tested by the program Frequency from Range. The distribution of new words from passage to passage and book to book is calculated to see whether it is balanced; the sentence length in every passage is counted to make sure if the textbooks have a suitable change of difficulty of reading comprehension.The result from the research of this essay shows that on the word level, the practicability, the coverage of high school English words and college English words of Experiencing English are relatively good; however, the disadvantages of the textbooks are that the word difficulty from book to book is not large enough, a large number of words not included in the high school vocabulary are not offered in the glossary of the college textbooks, the repetition of new words is low, the distribution of new words in some passages are unbalanced, the change of difficulty in some reading materials varies a bit dramatically and the distribution of difficulty from book to book is uneven.
