More and more critical concerns and reputations have being given to MU Dan's poetry for the last two decades.The auther of this thesis has witnessed this development of Mudan studies and kept on the relevant research ever since she was an undergraduate.On the reading and interpretion of MU Dan's poems, She argues that both the Chinese cultural heritage, pertaining mainly to Confucianism, and the impacts from western modern theories and techniques of poetry writing, also the blending of them, bring forth the vigor and power in MU Dan's poetry.The impersonality in poetry writing, which has its source in Chinese Confucian theory and the western poetic theory, virtually are the striking literary perspective in MU Dan's poetry.This thesis aims at the interpretation of the style of impersonality of MU Dan's poetry, which is discussed in three chapters.In the first chapter, the auther confirms the excellency of Modan's poetry and then gives an overall review on the developing academic studies on Mudan and his poetry, also, explains the poectic values of the theory of impersonality in poetry.Consideration is given to the Confucian theory in Chinese heritage and western modern poetic theory which takes T.S.Eliot's theory as the center, and also the difference between the impersonality and the private emotion, the relation between the impersonality and poet's personality.to sum up, the auther confirms that the impersonality virtually are the striking perspective in MU Dan's poetry.In the second chapter, the auther furtherly explores the sources of the perspective of impersonalilty in the Chinese and the western poetic tradition.She thinks that Mudan makes his style in the blending of tradition and mordernnity, which obviously displays in his poems as the effective and instructive impacts both from the tradition and the western modern literary theories. So far the themes and style are concerned, Modan's poetry is actually a kind of modern writing that embodies the spirit of the age of twentieth century and the comprehensive broad horizontal perspective. In the third chapter the auther explores the excellency of the impersonality of MU Dan's poetry in details by at four aspects, that is, the poetic art of the age, the broad poetic senses, the rational intelligent intentions and the inspiring lyricism. The exploration is based on the close reading,as the kind of method proposed by the school of New Criticism, on MU Dan's main works, and the critical reviews on the accomplishment of the techniques, the poetic insight, the wits and the inspiration of his poetry.In the final part of conclusion, the author summarizes the excellency of Modan's poetry for its richness in expressing the modernity as well as the tradition of literature, as what is obviously shown that the tradition proves the confidence in one's contribution to the society and the people, while the auther restates that the perspective of impersionality of his poetry brings up the conformity of his art and his thoughts as well as the emotional vitality of his poetry.As for the methods in this thesis, the author's viewpoints and her exploration relies on a tentative and comprehensive collecting and reading of academic works, also the close reading, the instructive analysis and interpretation of the Mudan's works.
