In recent years, the study of language learning strategies has become a hot topic in the field of foreign language teaching and learning. People began to pay more and more attention to the effect of learning strategies on foreign language learning, which provides language learners with effective methods in the process of foreign language learning. Reading is one of the most important skills in foreign language learning, so as a part of learning strategies, reading strategies attract more and more attention of scholars in the world. Transfer is a common phenomenon is the process of second language acquisition, and most second language learners influenced by their mother tongue. However, as far as the present study results are concerned, the studies that connect reading strategies and transfer are relatively rare. Especially in the field of the positive transfer of mother tongue in the applying of reading strategies.This study aims at finding out the similarities and differences between good readers and poor readers in using reading strategies by investigating reading strategies taken by non-English major's freshmen, then to get the influence of Chinese, the mother tongue to English, the second language in the part of reading strategies. It is hoped to provide some helpful references to the teaching of second language reading.The thesis starts with the background of language learning strategies, and based on which the study background of reading strategics is draw. At the same time, the research achievements of transfer are introduced, and some researches on reading strategies are commented.There are three research questions in this thesis:1) What reading strategies have been most and least frequently taken in English reading process? What are the differences between good and poor English readers?2) What reading strategies have been most and least frequently taken in English reading process? What are the differences between good and poor English readers?3) What is the relationship in the use of reading strategies between English and Chinese? What are the differences between good and poor English readers?In the process of research, both questionnaire and interview were taken. On the basis of questionnaire, some participants were chosen randomly to be interviewed. There were 200 students involved in the research. The results showed that:1) In English reading, affective strategies are most frequently used, and social strategies are least frequently used. There is no significant difference between good and poor English readers.2) In Chinese reading, affective strategies are most frequently used, and social strategies are least frequently used. There is no significant difference between good and poor English readers.3) There is transfer from Chinese to English in using reading strategies. Both good and poor English readers have transfer in their Chinese and English reading strategies, and most of them are positive transfer.Then, ten from each group were chosen to be interviewed, in order to retest and supply the research results.At last, the author set forth the enlightenment to English reading teaching, and gave some suggestions. Teachers should strengthen the training of reading strategies rather than the methods of answering questions; They should encourage students to read English by themselves according to their own needs; They should pay attention to the positive transfer of reading strategies.
