As a composition of great importance in the European history of concertos, the Beethoven Piano Concerto No.5 is a representative creation of Beethoven during his maturation period. When composing the body of this concerto, Beethoven applied plenty of composing skills, rigorous organizational structure, and extremely concise design to endow the music with electrifying momentum. On the other hand, this concerto was closely associated with the temporal social background, and thus, had bright time characteristics and important historical meanings. Beethoven's bourgeois ideas pursuing freedom, equality and universal fraternity were deeply embedded in this composition and became the spiritual content of the composition. This thesis comprises four chapters. As a general introduction to piano concertos and Beethoven's compositions of piano concertos, Chapter 1 reviewed the historical development of piano concertos since the Beethoven Piano Concerto No.2. As analyses on the body of the music, starting from the essential elements of music, Chapter 2 analyzes the creation characteristics on the aspects of themes, tonality, harmony, rhythm, and melody. Taking Beethoven's personal life experiences and the temporal social background into account, Chapter 3 explores the underling humanistic spirits and ideological connotations of the composition. Finally, conclusions are drawn on the essential reasons for Beethoven Piano Concerto No.5's illustrating Beethoven's music at his height. Beethoven Piano Concerto No.5 is a stellar representative of Beethoven's composing skills and the crystallization of his spiritual connotation.
