Reading, as a main way of input for language learning, plays an important part in all the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. However, traditional teaching methods pay less attention to the consistency of text and put more emphasis on language point teaching, which leaves less space for students' reading ability training. With task-based language teaching (TBLT) which uses tasks as teaching means teachers can create tasks to do things with words and foster students' comprehensive competence of using the language. In reading task performance, directed by task goals, learners try to make use of all resources and adopt various means to get information from the reading materials, which make the learners in the state of active and natural learning.TBLT is a teaching method whose center is "tasks" During the study procedure, students focus on many different kinds of activities in which students can learn language naturally. Thus, students can improve their English learning. TBLT is widely used in English teaching in Higher Vocational Schools. This study aims at improving the reading ability of the students majoring in pre-school education in Nanjing Higher Normal College for Pre-school Education.Based on Willis' TBLT pattern, the author makes teaching experiments in two classes of grade four. One is an experimental class and the other one is a controlled class. The author tries to make it clear that the TBLT has a positive effect on students' reading ability and scores. This research attempts to bring their potentials into full play in order to explore effective ways of promoting English reading of students in Higher Vocational Schools.
