As a novel and very effective assistant teaching means, multimedia has been widely applied in classroom instructions. In recent years, there have been numerous studies concerning multimedia-assisted teaching and the context theory. However, most of the researches mainly discuss the advantage of using multimedia; few are found to investigate the construction of context by the application of multimedia in the College Oral English Teaching & Learning in eastern and western academic field.Based on the context theory, this paper attempts to find out the effect of constructing context by the application of multimedia to oral English classroom instruction in Shandong Jianzhu University. This paper adopts questionnaire as the main researching means so as to investigate the problems existing in the process of Oral English Teaching & Learning in Shandong Jianzhu University. The author also collects some information and data to prove the efficiency of the application of the multimedia to help non-English majors improve their spoken English ability. One purpose of this paper is to investigate the students'interest and their attitude towards the application of multimedia. Another purpose of the thesis is to examine the effectiveness of the application of multimedia to College Oral English Teaching & Learning.200 College students of non-English majors participate in the research as the subjects. There are 98 students in the experimental group and 102 students in the control one. They are taught oral English under the teaching mode of constructing context by the application of multimedia and in the traditional way respectively. The PPT courseware, audio files, video clips, and still images related to College Oral English Teaching are served as the instrument in the experimental group of the study. During the process of experimenting, the author combined methods of questionnaire, observation in class, pretest and posttest. And the author made a qualitative and quantitative analysis of all the data. Three results found after the analysis can be illustrated as follows:Firstly, students hold highly positive attitudes towards the application of multimedia Secondly, the majority of the students admit the great importance of speaking good English. Thirdly, the study shows clear evidence to indicate the effectiveness of improving students'spoken ability in English by constructing context through applying multimedia to College Oral English instruction.After the comparative analysis of EG and CG, the author finds that there are some poignant problems and limitations in traditional teaching mode, such as in aspects of student-centered, active construction as well as the way of assessment and reflective pedagogy. In order to solve these problems, the author puts forward some suggestions and measures to optimize the College Oral English Teaching & Learning.The result of the research has a reference value of improving the oral English teaching in college and the design of teachers'courseware. Since the samples studied in the paper are limited, the conclusion drawn from the paper is expected to give more attention and further study.
