For a long time, teaching Chinese vocabulary is the weak point in foreign language teaching. There has been no significant improvement for many years. The most fundamental reason is that our foreign language teaching basically adopted the western way of language teaching, the "word oriented" teaching method, making the advantages of understanding and remembering Chinese characters into the disadvantages, leaving a lot of detours to go.We believe that, in order to smooth the vocabulary teaching, we should follow the Chinese what it really is to grasp Chinese vocabulary characteristics, and we should go back to turn to the teaching strategies of "Chinese character oriented ", to better the services for foreign language teaching. In this thesis, we take the "Chinese character oriented" theory as a starting point, focusing on the relationship between the Chinese and the Chinese characters to provide theoretical support for teaching methods and models in vocabulary teaching. Finally, through the experimental study, we exam the influence of which the character and word based approach may be applied to non-Chinese cultural circle of learners, i.e. the two approaches will create different effects on the learners. The results show that character oriented approach is better than the word oriented to the non-Chinese cultural circle of learners in teaching vocabulary.
