The rapid development of modern cities contributes to the modern city's unprecedented focus on their own brand images, and, as the most concrete, condensed and essential medium, city logo is increasingly designed and applied domestically. In order to undertake the successful design of a city logo, one needs to exercise a thorough analysis of the relevant geography, economy, culture and city individuality.Some well-known logos, for instance,"Flying Dragon" of Hong Kong,"Everybody's Chongqing," of Chongqing City,"Hang" of Hangzhou City, and those of Dalian and Taiwan, etc, have served as precedents to initiate the development of city brand construction, and many others begin to follow the examples. However, domestic city logo design and study began at a comparatively time, and has not fostered an established theoretical system and operational method, which renders a question:what is the direction for Chinese city logo design?The present paper, after referring to many relevant design and theoretical books home and abroad, performing comparisons and analysis of success and failures, harvests lessons from the notion combining city logo design and city context, and practices consideration and probe into concerning strategies and methods of representing city context. The paper aims to explore value and meaning city context has for the construction of city brand logo visual image. The paper analyzes the meaning of city logo, relationships between city logo and city context, and makes attempt to explore the combination of city logo with city context and make perfect visual image. The paper also tries to propose guide for city logo design, undertakes theoretical innovation, dismisses the stereotyped thinking concerning nation, area and city, thus, city logo is the historic and cultural accumulation, and meanwhile full of modernness. The logo varies accordingly, reinforces flexibility and concreteness between different factors. It is more opening and extending, and more vigorous and eye-catching, which contributes to the innovation and growth of conventional visual image system mode.The paper, after undertaking the theoretical analysis and case study, summarizing practical demonstration theoretically, takes Huangshan city logo as an example, presents a successful design of city logo, by which it comes to its conclusion of the ideas covered in the paper. City context is the soul of city logo, the relationships between the two needs to be explored and summarized, with the hope of producing successful designs, and providing scientific theoretical guide and experience support for the industry.
