Study On Valence Of Verbs In The Analects Of Confucius

French linguist L.Teniere founded valence theory in the fifties of last century, in order to describe dependencies between verbs and a certain number of nominal elements."Valence"is derived from the concept of"value", which is borrowed from the chemistry. Valency grammar theory has drawn great concern and attention in Chinese grammar field since Dexi Zhu applied this theory in Chinese grammar study in the eighties. With the maturing of valence theory, it has been used in wider and wider range. In recent years, in addition to using valence in Chinese study, some scholars also put this theory to the ancient Chinese studies. Although it is a new attempt to adopt valence theory to study ancient Chinese, the initial success has achieved. Adoption of valence theory in ancient Chinese not only contributes to the establishment of theoretical framework of ancient Chinese grammar, but also exerts a certain reference value for the study on modern Chinese. The Analects of Confucius has great literary significance as China's first collection of essays in quotation style and one of the Confucian classics. Its specific style plays an important role on the research on the language of the PreQin Dynasty. Research on the language of The Analects of Confucius by means of valence theory on the relationship between the verbs and nouns is quite rare. Therefore, detailed analysis on valence situation in the Analects of Confucius carries great significance.Valence of each verb and its related sentence in the Analects of Confucius will be analyzed in the first five chapters. The first chapter is an overview of verb study on the Analects of Confucius. Single valence verbs, bivalent verbs, bivalent two-way verbs, trivalent verbs and constructions relevant to them in the Analects of Confucius are depicted respectively from Chapter Two to Chapter Five. Chapter Six appears as the conclusion. This dissertation is classified from the perspective of "semantic valence" and "direction of syntax ". Establishment of basic constructions of sentences and analysis of derived sentences will be carried out on the basis of classification. Description method, inductive method, statistical method and other methods are used to analyze semantic roles of verbs and relevant constructions.
