The underground epitaph is a kind of inscriptions buried under the earth which was placed in the tomb with coffins, to mark the identity of the dead and its role in his/her family. Epitaphs and stone tablets are on a par with one another. They appeared in the Han Dynasty, matured in Northern Dynasties, and flourished during the Sui and Tang Dynasties. Especially in Tang Dynasty, epitaphs have been developing rapidly in Chang'an and Guanzhong Plain, the embellishments of epitaph in writing went to the highest position. The four-god dermatoglyphic pattern which has different forms,locations and way of expressions. their implication is worth us thinking deeply and discussed. The folk culture and ideology behind the four-god dermatoglyphic pattern is worthy to explore. It involved the whole social politics, economy, culture and art of every level, reflected the Tang history and culture. it is a so-called "encyclopedia" Tang society.Based on the core of the four-god dermatoglyphic pattern, this paper unscrambled and researched the tang dynasty epitaphs from the perspective of art. These epitaphs not only has the rich connotation and meaning, but also the outstanding representative of the traditional Chinese pattern. More importantly, they offered valuable resources for art, history, and archaeological research. It has important academic value to systematically and comprehensively analyze the epitaphs.Firstly, this paper overviewed the general Chinese ancient epitaphs and that of Tang Dynasty. And in the review of the Tang Dynasty historical and cultural background, concrete description and analysis of the distribution of epitaphs and the auspicious implication have been provided, especially in Chang'an and Guanzhong Plain.Secondly, this paper studies the image and decorative style of epitaphs in Chang'an and Guanzhong Plain, and unscrambled the cultural significance hidden behind. These two chapters also are the focus of this paper. This paper not only manage to demonstrate and form system in the forms of hand-painted counterdraw and tabular form of the four-god dermatoglyphic pattern in tang dynasty chang-an. In addition, this paper display the comparative analysis from many aspects, not only with ancient cultural relics, but also with those of different dynasties, different regions. Hence, the author summed up cultural meaning of epitaph.Finally, from angle of the aesthetics and art, this paper summarizes the profound influence of tang dynasty on the contemporary decoration of the four-god dermatoglyphic pattern.
