Cohesion is a hot topic of English teaching reform, which is also one of the difficulties in English teaching and learning. Solving the cohesion problem is required in order not only to implement the quality-oriented education but also to perfect teaching concepts in the English teaching of the primary school and middle school. Dealing well with the cohesion problem of English teaching is not only the work that should be considered by the junior school teachers or the senior high school teachers but also by all teachers of English teaching process. For cohesion of English teaching is worthy of long-time and continuous attention. Unfortunately, in reality, some teachers have been conscious of this problem with no effort to figure out the reasons, others just consider it without taking any action, and others do take some actions but not in a scientific way or single-handedly instead of cooperative support.At present, the problem of the cohesion from primary schools to middle schools in English teaching is really concerned by the education sector and related experts and teachers. Related articles appear constantly in various newspapers, journals, or on the Internet and other media. However, most of them are discussing the issue in a way of "down-top", that means standing at the point from the primary school, or from a macro point to think of the problems. The present author has been struggling years on the position of English language teaching in the middle school and has considerable this kind of teaching experience. Therefore, this research, which stands on the perspective of the middle school, studies the issue of the cohesion from primary schools to middle schools in English teaching in the way of "top-down," that is, how to grasp the critical first year of the middle school during the process of the teaching transition.This thesis has five main parts. The first part is the introduction of the research background, research aim, significances and the theoretical study with the related research at home and abroad. Chapter One introduces the five starting points to the transition and an investigation of the English teaching and learning in the sixth grade in the primary school and the seventh grade in the junior school. Chapter Two deals with the five problems and makes an analysis of the transition according to the investigation which was made in Chapter Two. In Chapter Three comes an experiment of the English teaching and learning in Grade Seven, which is guided by the related theories and tries to verify the meaning and feasibility of the research. The concluding part aims to arouse more some interest and attention of teachers and relevant personage, so as to optimize the foreign language teaching.The present author thinks, as English teachers, we should arouse more English teachers to the concern of the connecting problem for the English teaching of the primary and middle schools. Cooperation will surely lead to more and better effective methods, avoidance of the waste of manpower, material resources and time, and the continuity of English teaching of the primary and middle schools.
