With the widely application of free-space optical (FSO) communication technology, the need for FSO system management is increasing. As to the traditional FSO devices, point to point management model is usually used. However, in this way, resource-sharing and information transmission among different stations cannot be realized. In this thesis, the method of network management is introduced. We use embedded network management agent to provide remote monitoring for FSO devices via TCP/IP network. The functions of this management system can be extended by adding management nodes. After shortly explain the character and applications of FSO communication system, simple network management protocol (SNMP) and the research status in brief, I introduce the performance parameters which are needed to be monitored in FSO communication system. As well, I introduce the construction and principle of the management system in four aspects: protocol, networks, hardware and software. Secondly, I elaborate on the design and implement of the agent and manager of this network management system. In design part, I have a brief overview of the system to be achieved, and several development issues such as system requirements analysis, operating platform and its development tools are describbed, and then, as all the function modules are involved, the system design and its workflow are analysed in detail. In implement part, I elaborate on the realisation processes of each function model. Thirdly, The testing results are analyzed, which illustrate that the system achieves the requirement of real-time network monitoring for the performance parameters such as link statement, power statement, environment temperature, and input/output optical power in FSO communication system. Finally, I summarize the main part of this thesis.
