On The Thought Of The Irrationality Of Underdetermination Thesis

Underdetemination Thesis is always the critical topic in the area of philosophy of science, it is also the major weapon of anti-realist and relativist, which is hold to attack scientific realist. Underdetermination is a challenge to rationality and view of truth and realism of science, which make some philosophers of science push science toward a wrongly relative way, and it also bring about a huge shock and doubt to rationality and realism of science. Under this background, many scholars search for some way to protect the rationality of science on the basis of the analysis and critic of the Underdetermination. The paper is retorting the Underdetermination from several aspects under this research background.Fist of all, on the basis of practical rationality of experiment, we can attack the Underdetermination through the analysis of experimental example. Experiment is objective and practical, so it has its own life, the result of experiment hold the function of test and estimate theories. Through the analysis to a-particle scattering experiment, we can get the conclusion that the result of experiment could make choice between the theories, and some specifical experimental results can not only falsify theories, but also verify theories. Secondly, this paper considers K.Popper’s Falsification Theory provides a theoretic evidence for irrationality of the Underdetermination. Popper’s falsification claim that empirical evidence can detenninate the false of theories, because of the puzzle of inductive problem, Popper think that empirical evidence can determinate the false theories but not verify theories on the basis of reductive logic. Falsification resolve the inductive problem and the difficulty of principle of verification, it rebuilt the basic status of empirical evidence, thus it is rational in certain extent. At last, in this article, through interpretation of Laudan’s rounded analysis of Underdetermination, it criticizes and refutes the Underdetermination from semantics and epistemology. The author thinks, analyze the Underdetermination from Laudan’s theory, it is not only clear up the theory basic of Underdetennination, and also cut off the inference form of it. The author considers that the above discussion of three aspects adequately proclaim the irrationality of Underdetermination.This paper makes an overall exposition of the irrationality of Underdetermination from three different aspects, the interpretation of the irrationality of Underdetermination through the analysis of experimental example is the innovation of this article. The author refutes the irrationality of Underdetermination with an objective scientific example, it refuses that experiment was not adequately determined theories through the analysis of a-particle scattering experiment, and proclaims the irrationality of Underdetermination. At last, this paper tries to make an objective evaluate to Underdetermination:although Underdetermination got irrational character in a wide range, we cannot deny it gains some rational aspects view of scientific rationality.
