Riparian Zone is the interaction of water ecosystem and land Ecosystem, and the integrity of which is critical to watershed ecosystem and diversity of ecological functions, social functions. These years, the international river health plans are paying more attention on Riparian Zone with changing of land use type which lead to serious disappearance and simplification of riparian zone with more difference compared with natural Riparian Zone during the speeding urbanization. So, the character of Riparian Zone structure and the development degree of Riparian Zone social function are worth deeply discussing.There are about6.348millions of people living around Suzhou creek that is the landmark river of Shanghai through serious pollution,3periods of comprehensive treatment and ecosystem restoration under the changing of Riparian Zone structure and Riparian Zone social function. This paper traces the changing process of Riparian Zone situation in the past decades by searching the bypass papers and history materials.Above all, the land use type of center city Riparian Zone is separated into6parts including old quarters, new quarters, creative business district, commercial area,eological vegetation and others(storage area, wasteland,a little industrial area) on the basis of Riparian Zone aerial remote sensing data of Suzhou creek in1947,1979、1989、2000、2006、2008.Then,this paper try to build the evaluation index system of city Riparian Zone social function to give a suggestion about future plan of city Riparian Zone by field investigation using questionnaire survey. The results are as follows:1. The research of present situation. we divide construction of central Shanghai Riparian Zone into several types:(1)the structure of type a, only a little green land or a sidewalk or no green land.(2) the structure of type b, include landscape function and recreation function, and is widely applicable in the city Riparian Zone construction.(3) the structure of type c and d, ecological Riparian Zone structure. These kinds of structure focus on green environment by establishing vegetation zone between river and floodwall to promote the naturalization of river and the contacts between water and riparian, and is more adorable compared with the single floodwall. But, the limiting factor is that they need more ground space.2. The research of public expectation and cognition on Riparian Zone social function. The public pay more attention to reducing stress function, preservation of historical building and culture function, especial proving city beauty function which averagely getting over4points, sightseeing function, providing hydrophilic environment function in the many functions of Riparian Zone. The importance of cognition in RZ functions is divided into3level, hydrophilic landscape function>communicating place function>social space function.3. The research of Riparian Zone social function evaluation. The RSSFI of several kinds of reaches are as follows:ecological vegetation>creative business area>new quarters>commercial area>others>old quarters. Compared other reaches, Riparian Zone which is0-5m across get the worst evaluation while the20-30m meet the requirement of offering the best social function, and that implies Riparian Zone width is a important factor. Only considering the restrict factors, do3reaches of Suzhou creek lost their social function because of flood wall height, and are there5disabled reaches without way to be.4. The research of Riparian Zone construction and plan. This paper present suggestions on general design of Riparian Zone construction under Riparian Zone social function, and opinions about Riparian Zone improvement on the basis of reach type.
