The karst areas are distributed widely in China. Some major projects are inevitably set in the karst area. The third tailing pond of Pingguo Aluminum Industry Company locates under complicated karst geological condition. Therefore, investigating the characteristic and law of the karst development in the pond area and relative areas nearby is significant to prevent and cure the geological hazard for the project. The law of the karst development and the prevention and cure of the geological hazard for the third tailing pond of Pingguo Aluminum Industry Company are analyzed and researched in this paper, which leads up to the following result:Firstly, the regional karst growth of Pingguo area is controlled integratedly by five kinds of factor which is the lithological character, the structure, the groundwater, the new tectonic movement and the drainage datum plane of regional groundwater.Secondly, karst development on-site presents like this:vertical karst and horizontal karst alternately appear along with the depth changes. The shallower vertical karst is highly developed and the deeper karst mainly presents as conduit flow horizontally. This knowledge is important to the research of foundation treatment.Thirdly, the karst depressions in the pond area result from karst collapse. The side slope and the bottom on karst landform in the pond area are good in sealing. The karst leakage in the pond area is mainly minor karst, which indicates that it is a suitable location for the pond because the difficulties of construction and prevention are modest.Fourthly, the problem of karst leakage at tailing pond is analyzed and researched in the paper. According to analyzing the problem of karst leakage and stability, measures to prevent and cure the leakage are put forward. It is of great importance for guiding the design and construction of the pond.In conclusion, the result of the research has not only the direct meaning and value for another pond of Pingguo, but also the universal meaning and value for another karst area. Therefore, it is of great theoretical and practical value.
