Geochemical exploration is one of the most mineral prospecting methods, andgeochemical data processing is its core content. Its purpose is to discriminate geochemicalbackgrounds from anomalies, together with the information of geology, geophysics andremote sensing, to determine the prospecting targets by geochemical anomalies related tomineralization. According to different data processing model, geochemical data is mainly seenas a continuous curve (statistical method, trend analysis, filtering etc.) or multi-fractaldistribution (content-area method). West Junggar region includes many copper-gold deposits,such as Hatu gold mine on the north, and Baogutu copper-gold mine on the south. In thispaper, three data processing methods are used to determine the lower limit of geochemicalexploration. First, taking the average mean plus two times standard deviation as the lowerlimit of geochemical exploration by statistical method, some high anomalies are recognized inthis region, however, many medium-low anomalies related to mineralization are missing.Trend analysis, to some extend, highlights the local anomalies, such as the anomalies relatedto copper mineralization around the southwestern part of Tuketuke rock, but also lead to somefalse anomalies. Fractal content-area method lowers the threshold to great degree, andincludes all the known mineralization points. However, the result made by fractal method is alittle lower, which makes the whole region abnormal. Based on the analysis above and fractaltheory, mixed field and second fractal processing are first proposed in this paper. Geochemicalbackground and anomaly are separated more delicate by second fractal processing, and theresults of lower limits of geochemical exploration are more sensible than other three methodsmentioned above. According to the new results, six significant copper-gold prospectingtargets are determined.
