There has been a growing concern on the global warming mainly arising from the huge amountof world-wide carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. As one of the largest CO2emitters, China is nowfacing great pressure on reducing its CO2emissions. The sustainable development in economic alsorequire transformation of the traditional development model. These all make the CO2reducing policyimplementing immediately. However, as a major developing country, the China government shouldtake concern on the relationship between CO2emissions and economic growth. This paper estimatesthe emission performance and shoadow price of CO2and the main conclusions are as follows:Firstly, this paper established the model on emission performance and shadow price of CO2based on the stochastic frontier analysis. The causality tests show that there is causality relationshiprunning from energy consumption to CO2emissions and either to economic growth. Therefore, energyconsumption should be taken into the model as an input variable.Secondly, this paper gives a study on the emissions performance based on the stochastic frontieranalysis model. The empirical results show that on the average the emissions performance of China isestimated as0.162in the sample period. The results also show that the emissions performances ofeach province of China are qurite different.Finally, this paper estimates the shadow price of CO2emissions. The results show that theshadow price increases first and then decreases with the average value of0.4127. The shadow pricesof each province are quite different from each other. Moreover, the level of productivity is positivelyrelated with the shadow price, while the level of emissions takes a negative correlation with theshadow price.
