The release accident occurred during the hazardous materials transportation will cause seriously damages. How to control the transportation risk and improve the safety is the key of hazardous materials transportation. Forecasting the threaten zone in real-time during the transportation is one important content. Uncertain environment factors make it difficult to forecast, while simulation has superiority in dealing with dynamic and uncertain problems. Based on the analysis above, we study the following problems,(1) Construct the Internet of Things for monitoring hazardous materials. The Internet of Things is use to collect real-time monitoring data. We take the three layers architecture, including sensing layer, transportation layer and application layer. Arduino is use as the controller, which integrates RFID, sensors and other hardware to get the position of transportation truck, temperature of hazardous materials etc. The transportation layer is base on the Zigbee protocol.(2) Design the simulation system for hazardous materials release accident. We take the Lagrangian Particle Dispersion Model (LPDM) to simulate the dense gas release accident. Furthermore, we proposed a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) based LPDM to improve the speed of simulation. Then, we provide a visually approach to reveal the hazardous materials transportation process and the evolution process of release accidents by integrating the simulation model into Geographic Information System (GIS).(3) Develop the prototype system. We take the Arduino based robot to simulate the transportation process, which will execute in laboratory instead of the outdoor hazardous materials transportation. Based on the prototype system, we verified the Internet of Things based hazardous materials transportation simulation system. This study is helpful to improve the scientific and effectiveness of threaten zone forecast during hazardous materials transportation, and provide decision support for transportation dispatching, and improve the safety of hazardous materials transportation.
