The plastic pipe is one of the main productions produced by extrusion. The extrusion dieof the plastic pipe, which is designed by necessary information, such as the pipe material, pipedimensions, extruder selected, is a key component of extrusion molding equipments. Aadequate die could be designed by searching for the relevant data and doing a seriescalculations. In order to improve the design efficiency of pipe extrusion die, the structuredesigns of the mandrel die and basket die and the method of intelligent design are studied indetail with the thought of knowledge engineering. Based on these studies, a pipe extrusion diedesign module is developed in Pro/Engineer, a3D CAD software.In this thesis, the main accomplished works are:(1) After comparative analysis of kinds of intelligence design tools, Pro/Engineeringsoftware is selected as software platform, C++of Visual Studio2005is selected as theprogramming language and SQL Server2000is selected as the database;(2) The design theory of the pipe extrusion die, the structures and design principles ofthe mandrel die and basket die are introduced. The parameterization of part and assembly arealso studied in the thesis;(3) Based on summarizing the knowledge of the mandrel die and basket die, theknowledge is classified. According to types of the pipe die design knowledge, the knowledgeis represented by production representation, object-oriented representation andprocess-oriented representation. Rule based reasoning and its realization form are studied;(4) The connection is built between Visual Studio2005and SQL Server2000by ODBC;(5) By using the techniques above, the overall framework, work procedure and interfaceof the system are described in the thesis;the pipe extrusion die system is developed;(6) Both examples of the mandrel die and basket die are introduced to show the system’swork steps, and the melt rheological activities in the dies are simulated and studiedrespectively, which proves the feasibility of the intelligent design of the pipe extrusion die.
