Ilmenite is the primary titanium resource in our country accounting for98%of all the titanium resource. However, because of its complex composition and fine size of value minerals, it is very difficult to process the ilmenite ore. As the titanium industry has been developed rapidly, more and more titanium concentrates has been demanded in China in recent years. Therefore, there is a great economic and social significance of efficiently developing and utilizing the ilmenite resource. The research in this paper adopted the flowsheet composed of low-intensity magnetic separation (removal of iron)—high-intensity magnetic separation (discarding tailings)to pre-treat the tailings from iron ore dressing of vanadium-containing titanomagnetite in Panzhihua. The concentrate from high-intensity magnetic separation were used for condition experiment of collector. A new mixed type collector of XT was developed and the mechanism of it reacting with the ilmentite was also performed. The results of this research showed that:(1) The flotation results showed that the TiO2grade of concentrate was improved from19.59%to47.64with a recovery of61.16%in an open circuit flotation (one roughing and two cleaning operation), using solely XT as collector.(2) The results from industrial expanded experiment of XT indicated that A high-grade concentrate of47.42%TiO2with a73.28%recovery was obtained when the feed grade was17.80%.(3)The result of infrared spectral analysis implied that there was a chemisorption between the collector and the surface of ilmenite that could explain the good collecting effect of XT.(4)Above research results showed that A、B and C those who can react together to form the collector XT had a good synergistic effect and hence had a nice selectivity to the concentrate from high-intensity magnetic separation. Taking the economic factors into account, XT can replace the collector MOS used in the present flotation process.
