The high concentration organic wastewater usually contains large amounts of mattersuch as cellulose, protein, fat and carbohydrate. Because such wastewater always has highconcentration of organic matter, complex composition, high acidity or alkalinity and maycontains toxic substances, using the general wastewater treatment methods are difficult tomeet the technical and economic requirements, its purification and utilization has become ahot topic of the environmental protection technology research.The anaerobic sludge from the brewery was used as the inoculation sludge and thewastewater with beer as the raw water herein. The start-up and the characteristics of pollutantremoval of the central backflow EGSB reactor was studied, the operation parameters werealso investigated. The results of the experiment are as follows:1. The central backflow EGSB reactor completed the sludge domestication in the17thday. In the59th day, the influent COD reached8500mg/L, the volume load was16.32kgCOD/(m~3·d), and the removal rate of COD remained stable at95%or more. Thereactor started up successfully.2. In the up-flow velocity optimization stage, the temperature was maintained at30℃~35℃, pH value at6.5~7.0and HRT at12.5h. It is turned out that, the removal rate ofCOD was highest to reach96.76%when the up-flow velocity was at3.0m/h.3. The performance of the reactor began to decline with the HRT10h, influent COD8055.92mg/L, effluent COD1328.42mg/L, the removal rate of COD83.51%.4. When the alkalinity was300mg/L, the removal rate of COD was more than90%. Thereactor achieved a good operating in lower alkalinity condition, so operating cost is reduced.5. At the temperature of20℃, the influent COD was7000mg/L, volume load was11.76kg/(m~3·d) and the removal rate of COD can reach80%or more. The reactor achieved abetter performance at lower temperature.
