Novel polystyrene-supported chelating resins containing sulfoxide and polyethylenepolyamines have been prepared. Their structures were characterized by elemental analysis andfourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The morphology and pore structure were alsoidentified using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The adsorption properties of the newlyformed chelating resins for metal ions such as Ag+, Hg2+et al including static saturatedadsorption capacity, adsorption kinetics, the influence of pH, thermodynamics, adsorptionselect performance and reuse performance were investigated in details.1. Novel polystyrene-supported chelating resins containing sulfoxide and polyethylenepolyamines have been synthesized, in which the polyethylene polyamines areethylenediamine, diethylenetriamine, and triethylenetrtaamine respectively. The structures ofthe newly formed resins were characterized by FTIR, SEM, elemental analysis, and pore sizeanalysis. The maximum adsorption capacitied of the resins for Ag+, Hg2+, Cu2+, Pb2+, Ni2+,Zn2+, Cd2+, Cr3+and Fe3+were investigated at pH=5. The order of the adsorption capacities ofthe resin for the investigated metal ions was Ag+> Hg2+> Cu2+> Pb2+> Ni2+. The resins haveno affinities for Zn2+, Cd2+, Cr3+and Fe3+. The adsorption capacities of the resins containingbis (sulfoxide and polyethylene polyamine) are more than twice that of the reisns bearingmono (sulfoxide and polyethylene polyamine) owing to the close proximity of donor atoms.2. The adsorption properties of the resins containing bis (sulfoxide and polyethylenepolyamine)(donted as PS-(SO-EDA)2、PS-(SO-DETA)2and PS-(SO-TETA)2) for Hg2+areinvestigated in details. The adsorption mechanism is liquid film diffusion. The adsorptionkinetics and thermodynamics of resins are pesuo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuiradsorption model respectively, and the temperature conducive to the increase of theadsorption rate and adsorption amount. Three kinds of resins have good adsorption selectivityand resuse performance for Hg2+.3.
