Modified resin has a wide application to the removal of heavy metals and dyes in wastewater, and the adsorption selectivity depends largely on the functional groups. To realize the efficient removal of metals and dyes in wastewater,we designed and prepared the adsorbents based on polystyrene resin(PS)and investigated their adsorption properties. To simultaneously remove a variety of heavy metal ions from wastewater,a novel two-step approach, which involves the grafting of monomer via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization(SI-ATRP)and the subsequent derivation with mixed ligands of soft and hard bases onto the surface of resin, was proposed to develop the dual-function chelating resin with high capacity. The adsorption properties of the prepared resins were investigated by using common and harmful metal ions,e.g.,Cu(II)and Pb(II),Cd(II)and Ag(I),as well as Fe(III)and Cr(III),which are junctional, soft and hard acids, respectively. The adsorption of the six metal ions obeys the Langmuir model and the pseudo second-order kinetics model. The adsorption amount of each metal ion depends largely on the ratio of two ligands on surface of resin. The resins obtained with 1:1 of ASA to IMEA have higher adsorption capacity for hard, soft as well as junctional acids, and display stronger salt tolerance in saline solution and excellent reusability. These findings demonstrate that the prepared resins can be applied in the removal of varieties of heavy metals from the complicated saline effluent, and the proposed approach has practical potential to develop various types of dual-function chelating resin. To remove dyes in wastewater and promote removal efficiency,we designed and synthesized one type of poly(ionic liquid)-modified(PIL)resin.Specificly,vinyl imidazole was transferred into the ionic liquid(IL)and subsequently copolymerized with vinyl pyridine(VP)via SI-ATRP on PS to abtain the PIL adsorbent materials. We chose diverse dyes as targets including methyl orange, cango red and coomassie brilliant blue for the verification of adsorption properties. We focused on the influence of conditions such as the amount of VP,the amount of adsorbent,p H,salt concentration, and adsorption isotherm and kinetics. The results show that the experiment of ionic strength verifies the electrostatic interaction between the adsorbent and the adsorbate, and proves the adsorbent has a certain degree of salt tolerance. The adsorption process conforms to Langmuir equation and pseudo-second-order kinetic equation.
