With the growing lack of traditional energy at nowadays, wind power is widely concerned as a renewable cleanenergy, and has been rapid development. However, the impact of wind power on power grid is becoming more andmore serious as increasing of the proportion of the scale of wind power in the grid. The adverse effect is mostlythe impact of wind power on voltage stability of the grid. STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator) isrepresentative of the latest technology in the field of reactive power compensation. It is has the merit of fastresponse rate, good stability, and continuous output of reactive power, so is suitable for reactive powercompensation to improve voltage stability of the system. In this paper, STATCOM is introduced into wind farmincorporated system, and the voltage stability of the system with STATCOM is studied in particular. The maincontents of this paper are as follows:(1) Propose study on the stable and dynamic mathematical model of doubly-fed induction generator windturbines and introduce the handling method of wind farm node in constant voltage control mode in power flow.(2) An improved node voltage stability evaluation index is proposed in this paper. The index considers theimpact of the power flow of all the lines connected with the same one bus on voltage stability of this bus in thesystem. The voltage stability of each bus in wind farm incorporated system can be accurately evaluated.(3) This paper takes wind farm as an example which is connected to IEEE14bus system. In order toconsiderably improve the static voltage stability, strategy for optimal location of STATCOM is adopted todetermine placement of STATCOM in the system. For maximum loading margin of the system as reason, theeffectiveness and feasibility for the node voltage stability evaluation index are verified.(4) In the case of three-phase short-circuit fault which occurs as soon as the wind farm is connected to IEEE14bus system, take it respectively on the study of the system with or without STATCOM compensation capacity,andanalyze the effect of STATCOM on transient voltage stability of wind farm.
