With the improvement of living standards, people put forward higher requirements forpower quality. However, because the grid contains reactive load inside, which not onlycauses the increase the loss of all types of electrical devices, but constitutes a greater threatto the power quality of the client,makes the system voltage instable. especially theconsequences of the impact load more seriously. For the dynamic and fast reactive powercompensation, so the distribution of the flow and the improvement of the power indicatorare extremely beneficial.Traditional reactive power compensation devices have lower capacity, coupled withthe slow response in sudden situations,so the performance of grid regulation is poor.Theappearance of static var compensator (STATCOM) has changed this situation, and itsreactive power compensation capacity will not change as STATCOM device capacitychanges. Based on10kV distribution network, the capacity of100kVar STATCOM isdesigned with a detailed analysis of STATCOM operational principle, circuit constitution,and how to improve the quality of grid. In addition, the STATCOM current indirect anddirect current control(two methods) have been refined, and the corresponding circuitmodels have been designed respectively. In SIMULINK, the dynamic simulation has beendone. Then according to the current,voltage and phase relationships with or without impactload from the different waveform graphs show that the two control methods for STATCOMadjustment characteristics are effective, achieving the desired compensation effect.In addition, based on the design of STATCOM software and hardware, the paperimproves the current indirect control method, which based on STATCOM operationmode,regarding STATCOM device as ac voltage source, adjusts phase and amplitudefrom STATCOM ac side of the voltage waveforms, achieving to adjust STATCOM ac sidecurrent indirectly. STATCOM has two parts in structure: the main circuit and controlcircuit.The main circuit takes a three-level quadruple method.The control circuit is dividedinto two units: the central processing unit and the pulse triggering unit, and they form a dual CPU structure. The former completes the tasks of power collection, data calculation,A/D conversion,etc;the latter obtains each pulse triggering the phase value and thecorresponding state word based on the frequency value and the compensation angle of theformer unit, and by the change of the electrical parameters, and the grid can be detectedand protected dynamically.
