Objective and methodsTo study the effectiveness of indocyaninegreen-mediated photothrombosis on best corrected visual acuity and central fovea thickness in predominantly classic subfoveal choroidal neovascularisation associated with age related macular degeneration.11cases(12eyes) were submitted to one or more treatments (at most3times) with an intravenous injection of indocyanine green solution followed by low irradiance, large spot810nm continuous laser application(100s).ResultsAfter12months of follow up, the final best corrected visual acuity was the same (plus or minus two lines) in five eyes (41.7%), improved more than two lines in five eyes (41.7%), and worsened by more than two lines in2eyes. Central fovea thickness before treatment and12weeks,48weeks after treatment was (391±69.89) μm,(337±56.23) μm and (332±62.07) μm,and there were statistical significances among them (P<0.05). Morphological changes by OCT at last follow up visit showed83.3%of patients with decreased fovea thickness and restoration of normal foveal contour. At48weeks visit, fluorescein leakage was absent from the previous classic component of the CNV in7eyes,decrease of CNV leakage in3eyes,stabilisation of fovea thickness and CNV leakage in2eyes. There were no complications related to the procedure.ConclusionIndocyanine green mediated photothrombosis may be an effective alternative treatment for predominantly classic subfoveal choroidal neovascularisation caused by age related macular degeneration.
