OBJECTIVES: Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a commonchronic recurrent episodes of upper digestive system diseases, andesophageal pH monitoring is an important means of diagnosis ofgastroesophageal reflux disease. Traditional catheter pH monitoring needto retain nasal catheter, and may make the patient discomfort andinconvenience, but wireless esophageal pH capsule to overcome theshortcomings of the traditional catheter pH monitoring. The aim of thisstudy was to investigate the safety, reliability, and complications related todomestic OMOM pH capsule monitoring in non-erosive reflux disease, andto evaluate its practical value in clinical applications.METHODS: Patients with symptoms of reflux, gastroesophagealreflux disease questionnaire (GerdQ ratings) more than10points andnegative endoscopy were included in gastroenterology outpatient of ourhospital. OMOM pH capsule was positioned transorally5cm above thedentate line using endoscopic measurement for48-96hours esophageal pHmonitoring. The pH data were uploaded to a computer for analysis of combining manual and automatic. The patients were observedcomplications related to the wireless pH capsule during monitoring process. They answered a questionnaire, which described the tolerance andsatisfaction during the pH tests.RESULTS: A total of25patients (7men and31women) wereenrolled and the mean age was48.2±10.1years. The average duration formonitoring was77:22±18:45(42:31-105:55).The mean time of pHcapsule excreted with the stool was(6.4±2.88)days. During pH capsulemonitoring,14(56%) patients had abnormal acid exposure and11(44%)patients had normal acid exposure.Problems of Technical failuresoccurred such as9(36%) data interruption,2(8%) dislodgement and2(8%)capsule removal. Symptoms related to capsule attachment were:asymptomatic in8(32%), mild symptoms in10(40%), moderatesymptoms to endure in4(16%), and severe symptoms can not stand thethree cases (12%), and two patients(8%)required removal of the capsule.CONCLUSION: OMOM pH capsule is a safe and reliable method, which is a very promising technology and has a certain clinical value, butneeds to be further technical improvements.
