Objective:To present the prevalence and influencing factors of depression and anxiety among primary school teachers in Changsha. To explore correlates bewtween depression, anxiety and artery elasticity. Methods:Using stratified cluster random sampling method to select3or4primary schools from each of five districts of Changsha. Finally we got1100teachers from19primary schools as study objects. Self-designed general inventory, The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) were applied to investigate primary school teachers. We selected146depression cases,150state anxiety cases,160trait anxiety cases,188normal control cases from1100teachers. Carotid-femoral artery pulse wave velocity (CF-PWV), Carotid-radial artery pulse wave velocity (CR-PWV), Carotid-ankle artery pulse wave velocity (CA-PWV) were measured by Complior SP.Results:We collected1010valid questionnaires (91.8%). The mean age of study objects was34.4. Women accounted for77.0%.The mean score of PHQ-9was5.41. The prevalence of moderately severe and severe depression was14.8%. The top four leading depressions were lack of energy, sleeping problems, upset and loss of pleasure. Univariate analysis showed:Levels of depression among different mean monthly income of family, different literary course, drinking or not, disease or not and different self-assessing pressure had significant statistical difference (PO.05). Multivariate analysis showed: mean monthly income of family less than2000yuan (OR=1.846, comparing with mean monthly income of family more than4000yuan), disease (OR=1.461, comparing with non-disease), moderately severe and severe self-assessing pressure (OR=2.846,6.828, comparing with low self-assessing pressure) were independent risk factors of elevated levels of depression. The mean state anxiety and trait anxiety score of male teachers were 42.56,42.22respectively. And those of female teacher were43.44,42.22respectively. Univariate analysis showed:trait anxiety score of teachers among smoking or not, different literary course had significant statistical difference (P<0.05). Nonconditional logistic regression analysis showed: ages30to39years old (OR=2.135, comparing with ages20to29years old), teaching experiences between11to20years (OR=3.169, comparing with teaching experiences less than10years) were independent risk factors of state anxiety; Drinking (OR=2.870, comparing with non-drinking), teaching experiences between11to20years (OR=3.373, comparing with teaching experiences less than10years) were independent risk factors of trait anxiety. There were significant satistic difference among three case groups of depression, state anxiety and trait anxiety and normal control group on CF-PWV, CR-PWV and CA-PWV. Multiple linear regression analysis showed:age, systolic blood pressure, heart rate, depression, state anxiety and trait anxiety were positively correlated with CF-PWV; Male, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, depression, state anxiety and trait anxiety were positively while age gender was negatively correlated with CR-PWV. Male, age, systolic blood pressure, depression, state anxiety and trait anxiety were positively correlated with CA-PWV.Conclusion:The prevalence of moderately severe and severe depression of primary school teachers in Changsha was14.8%.The top depressions were lack of energy, sleeping problems, upset and loss of pleasure. State anxiety and trait anxiety of both male and female teachers were significant higher than healthy individuals. Low mean monthly income of family, disease, severe pressure caused elevated levels of depression. Teachers ages30to39years old and teaching experiences between11to20years easily got state anxiety. Teachers who drink and has teaching experiences between11to20years easily got trait anxiety. After adjusting other variables, depression and anxiety were positively correlated with PWV.
