| Purpose:This text is aimed at putting forward proper English translation terms for basic theory of traditional Chinese medicine terms relative with qi, blood, fluid, liquid, sums up the consistent rate of different statistical standards, comes up with own English translation terms and provides reference for standardization of English translation of traditional Chinese medicine terms.Method:We classify, summarize, discuss and make a comparative analysis of terms on "qi, blood, fluid, liquid", which are from five kinds of domestic and overseas English translation standards in traditional Chinese medicine at present:1. Chinese and English concept of terms respectively refer to:(1)Chinese concepts of terms mainly refer to:The Republic National Standard Terms of The Basic Theory of TCM GB/T20348-2003; Noun of TCM. If there are no Chinese concepts of terms in these two standards, we refer to Nei Jing and The Basic Theory of TCM.(2) Concepts of English translation terms refer to:Oxford Advanced Learner’s English-Chinese Dictionary Fourth Edition Supplement Publication2. English translation entry of Five kinds of terms is divided into four types, collection of English translation terms according to:(1) We maintain the primary English translation terms toward fully consistent English translation terms in all the five standards.(2) We choose mostly a best term from original English translation terms toward mostly consistent English translation terms in all the five standards through discussion.(3) We choose the most appropriate term through discussion and comparison between selected similar terms and original terms toward partly consistent English translation terms in all the five standards through discussion.(4) We discuss zero consistent English translation terms in all the five standards through discussion not only from English translation terms, but also from Chinese concepts and it is the stress of this research,finally decide a suitable term.Result:Statistically, during all the94terms on "qi, blood, fluid, liquid" of traditional Chinese medicine:(1) There are four terms with fully consistent English translation terms in all the five standards which take up4.26%of the whole. They are qi, middle qi, blood and vessel.(2) There are terms with mostly consistency which take up17.02%of the whole. They are pectoral qi, nutrient qi, innate qi, acquired qi, heart qi, liver qi, spleen qi, lung qi, kidney qi, stomach qi, gallbladder qi, qi movement, qi transformation, essence/semen, acquired essence and innate essence.(3) There are16terms with partly consistency which take up17.02%of the whole. They are original qi, genuine qi, essence and qi, qi of zang-fu viscera/zang-fu visceral qi, meridian qi, ascending, descending, exiting and entering, ministerial fire, qi being leader of blood, clear fluid and blood from same source, essence and blood from same source, nutrient qi and blood, yin qi, yang qi and blood being mother of qi.(4) There are58terms with zero consistency which take up61.70%of the whole. They are heaven qi, earth qi, qi phase, healthy qi/normal qi, defensive qi, original theory of qi, substance transformation, substance and qi, agreement between substance and qi, disagreement between substance and qi, mutual change between substance and qi, mind/vitality/spirit, integrated physique-mind, upper jiao, middle jiao, lower jiao, thin fluid, thick fluid, defensive qi coming from upper jiao, defensive qi coming from middle jiao, defensive qi coming from lower jiao, nutrient qi coming from middle jiao, defensive qi moving outside vessels, nutrient qi moving within vessels, defensive qi moving outside vessels, qi dominating warmth, monarchic fire, normal yang qi, blood dominating moisture and nourishment, thin and thick fluid, five secretions, root of body, qi generating blood, qi pushing blood, qi managing blood, qi generating thin fluid, qi pushing thin fluid, qi managing thin fluid, thin fluid conveying qi, blood and sweat from same source, nutrient and defense, defensive phase, nutrient phase, thin fluid qi, visceral qi, fu visceral qi, blood phase, motive qi between kidneys, sweat, tear, thin saliva, thick saliva, snot, ascending, descending, exiting and entering existing in everything, the thin transforming into nutrient qi, the thick transforming into defensive qi, midnight, normal/pathological leucorrhea, essence being root of body, integration of essence and vessel, qi moving pushing water moving.Conclusion:During all the94terms on "qi, blood, fluid, liquid" of traditional Chinese medicine, there are74terms from original English translation terms in all the five standards and20new terms from the author. |
