This thesis is a tentative study on transediting in tour commentary from theperspective of functionalist translation theory. The author reviews the features ofEnglish tour commentary and its translation mainly under Shopostheorie and TextTypology. As a kind of tourism text, English tour commentary aims to facilitate thesightseeing of international tourists and help them understand Chinese culture moreeasily by means of tour guide’s oral interpretation. According to text typology, tourcommentary is featured with more than one function. Therefore, in translation of tourcommentary there will be addition, deletion, rewriting, restructuring and so on, all ofwhich can be regarded as the techniques of transediting.The functionalist translation theory is proposed by German scholars in1970s.Different from the traditional translation theories, functionalism focuses on demandsof the target text and target reader. In this thesis, the author firstly reviews thedevelopment of functionalist translation theory. Then necessities of applyingtransediting in tour commentary are analyzed from the perspective of functionalismand features of tour commentary, which can help to realize the translation purpose. Atlast, a case study of Xi’an Museum is brought in to discuss the application oftransediting in tour commentary translation. According to the study, the author got thetransediting techniques like addition, deletion, restructuring, combination can beapplied to solve certain problems in tour commentary translation. It is of greatsignificance to a high-quality English tour commentary.This thesis reviews the key theories of functionalist translation theory. Based onthe analysis of translation purpose, text typology and function and target addressees oftour commentary, it is concluded that transediting can well be applied in tourcommentary to perform the functions.
