Cai Xiang was a distinguished politician, calligraphist, litterateur, and scientist inNorthern Song Dynasty, which made him a representative of Scholar-bureaucrats inthe Northern Song—type culture.Because the personality spirit of his poetry was similar with that of thecalligraphy creation, his poetry creation was closely associated with his calligraphycreation. Cai Xiang’s literary works was to express Taoism, while his calligraphyworks was to express Golden Mean. They were complementary. He emphasized theimportance of learning from the excellent production of others in both poetry creationand calligraphy creation. Honoring Confucianism was the most remarkablecharacteristics of his poetry creation. At the same time, he paid much attention tomerging Romantic Charm into his calligraphy creation. The inner spirit of his poetrycreation tendency was consistent with that in calligraphy.The time factor and individual circumstances are the main reasons for theneglection of his poetry creation. The comparative research on Caixiang’s poetry andcalligraphy will help us to make an overall understanding of his all parts of ideology.Also, it is the comparative research on the relation of his two creations that will domuch benefits to the literature history.
