In the field of translation, the translation of Chinese ancient poetry is a hot topic."Imagery", which is mainly embodied in the creation of ancient Chinese poetry, is an important concept in it. In a sense, poetry translation is a process of image translation, and the process of translating an ancient Chinese poem into English is the process of restructuring and representing the images in English. By combining researches on translators’subjectivity and those on translation of images in ancient poetry made by scholars from home and abroad, the author finds that few researches on the inter-subjectivity between the translator and the original writer are carried out and the researches on the relations between translators’subjectivity and image restoration in the field of ancient poetry translation are also very lacking. This thesis takes translators’ subjectivity as the theoretical basis and the entry point, and analyzes with specific examples the roles of translators’subjectivity in restoring the images in poetry and ways of seeking the best images. The aim of this thesis is to gain a preliminary understanding about the relations between translators’subjectivity and the translation of the images in ancient poetry. This thesis is composed of five chapters. The first chapter is a general introduction to the study, including the background and purpose of the study and the organization of the thesis. In Chapter Two, previous studies and current situations of the translation of classical Chinese poem will be discussed and then the author summarizes the conditions of researchers’study on translator’s subjectivity at home and abroad. In Chapter Three, the author introduces theoretical background of the essay, the definition and causes for translator subjectivity. Chapter Four is the core part of the essay. In this part, the author analyzes how translator subjectivity is reflected on poetic images by using the theories proposed in Chapter Three. Firstly, by comparing translated works and translation methods of different translators, the author discusses from the perspective of translators’ subjectivity, and finds out the main differences and causes of different translations. Secondly, based on research results of researchers at home and abroad, the author cites many examples to illustrate the role of translator subjectivity in real translation. Combining theories with examples, the author summarizes how translators find the conjunction spot with the poets during the image restoration in the poem translation for the best aesthetic effects. In Chapter Five, the author reaches conclusions of the research and points out its significances and limits and raises suggestions for further researches.Owing to the specificity and complexity of poem translation, the author only chooses some typical examples to discuss how translator’s subjectivity effects in the translation of poem by analyzing the causes of translator’s subjectivity and the restrictions of image restoration in the process of translating poems. Inevitably, it may not be comprehensive enough. Therefore, the author hopes to study the translation of poetry from other aspects of translator’s subjectivity by collecting more data in the future research.
