Zeng Xi was a famous educator, calligrapher and scholar at the end of the Qing Dynasty. In the early Republic of China he was famous in calligraphy in Shanghai, and he was one of "the four masters". He was well known in the south and Li Ruiqing in the north of China. Zeng taught a large number of famous calligraphers, painters in Shanghai. The first chapter of this article begins from Zeng Xi’s life. With first-hand data and field investigation and sociological research methods, I investigated and researched his life experiences to give a detailed and reliable story. Based on this, I analyzed and studied the friends who influenced Zeng Xi greatly to understand Zeng Xi’s life and knowledge structure from a broader perspective so as to reveal Zeng Xi’s real life. The second chapter focuses on Zeng Xi’s calligraphy creation. Zeng Xi liked calligraphy since childhood. The calligraphy research should not start from his selling calligraphy works in Shanghai. In this paper the author visited his hometown, and found some of his early works of calligraphy, which was valuable to my reseach. From these works, I began to study Zeng Xi’s art of calligraphy, I got a more comprehensive understanding of Zeng Xi’s calligraphy and made a more objective evaluation of Zeng Xi’s calligraphy achievements and influences. The third chapter focuses on Zeng Xi’s calligraphy theories. In the process of Zeng Xi teaching his disciples, there were many calligraphy theories worthy of study. Finally, through comparison with Li Ruiqing and Kang Youwei’s calligraphy theories, we can further understand Zeng Xi’s value and significance of calligraphy theories. The fourth chapter summarizes Zeng Xi and his value and significance of calligraphy in the period of the Republic of China. This paper argues that at the time of calligraphy in that environment, Zeng Xi consciously mixed up north-south styles of calligraphy, emphasized inscription in the process of teaching, which was valuable and significant, and far-sighted in the academics. Zeng Xi’s calligraphy creation and calligraphy theories opened the prelude for teaching calligraphy compatible with inscription in the late twentieth century. He played the role of a bridge.
