This report is based on the translation of a Charles Dickens’s novel The Mistery of EdwinDrood (Chapter12-13) which is on the list of the Bilingual Project between the ForeignLanguage Teaching and Research Press and Henan University. The author translates for morethan10,000words. The report focuses on how to complete the translating process by Nida’stheory of functional equivalence, including the preparation before translating, translatingprocedure, cases analysis and perception after translating.Charles Dickens, whose literary position is as high as Shakespeare is a critical andrealistic novelist in the19th’s Britain. He is famous for sharp social criticism, vivid description,witty humor and detailed phycological analysis, and creates many unforgettable figures.Dickens pays special attention to the life hardships of those little persons living in the groundlevel of British society and thoroughly reveals the complicate social reality at that time, whichcontribute much to the development of British Critical and Realistic literature.The translation practice not only deepens the author’s translation theories, but alsoimproves the practical translation skills. It makes the author realize that it is necessary for anexcellent translator to make great efforts, lay solid bilingual foundation, own rich knowledgeof many fields and show professional morality.
