A Report On Chinese Translation Of So Many Ways To Miss The Point (An Excerpt)

Written by professor U. Milo Kaufmann who worked in the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, So Many Ways To Miss the Point, is a novel collection. Through telling about common people's various stories and experience, they could be regard as a sort of psychological and spiritual counselor to teenagers and young adults. In addition, the language of the collection is easy to understand and the description is vivid and interesting. While it has not been introduced in China. This summer through recommendation of my supervisor, the author got the opportunity to translate four stories of the book. That is The Man with a Spider Under His Scalp, Women at Wayside, The Man Without a Stomach, Tour Guides. Based on this translation practice, the author writes this translation report.The difficult and problem of this task is how the target readers get the same feelings from this collection, that is, how to achieve meaning equivalence and style equivalence. According to analysis of translation task and Functional Equivalence Theory to seek appropriate translation approaches. Firstly, to reach the equivalence in meaning, the author use creative translation, grammatical adjustment, addition, reduction and so on to translate the words, sentences and passages. Then she grasp the easy and natural, humorous style of this novel using adaption translation to improve target text forms and literal translation to achieve equivalence in style.Translation of this project hopefully can provide the translation of the religion novel for reference, so as to promote the propagation of religion novel. Meanwhile, the application of Functional Equivalence Theory to guide the translation practice will deepen the understanding of the theory itself and contribute to improve the author's translation as well as enhance her ability to guide the translation practice with translation theory.
