Xiaogan And Filial Piety

The culture of filial piety is an essential part of our traditional culture treasures. In all ages, filial piety has been inherited by Chinese as a kind of moral consciousness and basic principle of preserving life and conducting oneself in society, and has become the core concept of traditional Chinese ethics. In the development process of culture of filial piety, some factors such as economy, society and culture restricted the development and evolution of culture of filial piety. Therefore, the connotation of filial piety changes as well, and the change process is generally as follows:filial piety of taking care of their own parents and worshipping ancestors-filial piety of family ethics-filial piety of social ethics of relationship between people. The connotation of filial piety has been gradually enriched, and the resulting multi-cultural connections have also penetrated into the society in various fields and been deeply connected with traditional culture.At present, China is in the phase of transformational change, the building of a harmonious society is a major task of China. The culture of filial piety, as an important part of Chinese culture, should keep up with the development of society. The construction of harmonious culture of filial piety will not only help create a good atmosphere of family life, but also help cultivate humanity consciousness and a sense of gratitude for people, which has great significance to the creation of a harmonious society.This paper is divided into four parts, using a variety of research methods in the elaboration of content. In the first part, the author starts with the meaning of filial piety, and briefly introduces the understanding of filial piety by people in history, stating the interpretations of filiality and descriptions of piety in many ancient literatures. Although different interpretations to the meaning of filial piety have been found in different books and different practices to filial piety have been conducted in different ages, the core idea has been focused on expressing that the younger shall treat the elder well. Then the author summarizes the evolution of culture of filial piety from ancient times to the present age, from the formation period of culture of filial piety in pre-Qin period, then the period of "governing the world with filial piety" in the Han, Wei, Sui and Tang Dynasties to the mutation development period of culture of filial piety in the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, which has conducted a brief discussion on the historical development process of culture of filial piety.In the second part, the author focuses on introducing the connection between the culture of filial piety and Xiaogan city. Firstly, the author briefly introduces the geographic profiles and history of Xiaogan city and the origin of the city name "Xiaogan" from historical records. Dutiful sons of Xiaogan famous for carrying out the culture of filial piety, ancient ruins and remains of the culture of filial piety and the Xiaogan customs bearing the culture of filial piety are also introduced in this part, indicating multi-heritage culture of filial piety in Xiaogan.In the third part, the author analyzes the difficulties and challenges encountered by Xiaogan in the construction of filial piety culture mainly from three aspects—the breaking of heritage mode of filial piety by the change of family structure, the gradual fading of consciousness of respecting and supporting the old, and the absence of moral evaluation environment.In the forth part, by the analysis of useful exploration in the construction of filial piety in Xiaogan, the author, in combination with the current development of filial piety culture in Xiaogan City, concludes the construction of filial piety culture and obtains useful and valuable experiences, and then proposes some countermeasures and suggestions for the construction of filial piety culture in Xiaogan, which are mainly to integrate culture resources, enrich cultural activities of filial piety, strengthen moral propaganda and improve the pension scheme.
